Nostalgia in Motion: The Appeal of Digital Super 8
In a world of ultra-high-definition cameras and crystal-clear 4K video, there is something deeply soulful about a little bit of grain.
While I love a sharp, true-to-color photograph, I’ve always felt that some memories aren't meant to be perfectly polished. Some memories are meant to feel like a dream, or a half-remembered afternoon from childhood. That’s why I’ve fallen in love with offering Digital Super 8–style videos.
The "Camcorder" Soul
As an 80s baby, I grew up in the era of the early 90s camcorder. I remember the specific way those home movies looked: the slight shake of the hand, the way the light leaked into the frame, and that unmistakable lo-fi grit. It wasn't about professional production; it was about the feeling of being there.
When I create these videos for my clients, I’m tapping into that exact nostalgia. By filming in a 9:16 vertical format with a grainy, vintage aesthetic, the result isn't just a recording of an event—it’s a digital time capsule. It produces a "home movie" feel that captures the energy and movement of a wedding day in a way that static photos or clinical, high-def video simply can't.
Capturing the Feeling, Not Just the Details
Standard videography is great for seeing the details of the cake or the sharpness of the flowers. But Digital Super 8 is about capturing the vibe.
It’s the way your veil caught the wind for a split second.
It’s the blurred motion of your friends on the dance floor.
It’s the "lo-fi" warmth of a sunset that feels like a scene from an old movie.
Because these videos are delivered in a vertical format, they are perfect for the way we live our lives now—easily viewable on your phone, ready to be shared, and designed to be watched over and over again whenever you need a hit of pure nostalgia.
