The Fine Print Made Simple: Copyright, Privacy, and Every Single Frame
Wedding photography can sometimes feel like it's shrouded in mystery and strict rules. Not with me though, I prefer total transparency. My goal is for you to feel completely informed and comfortable with how your memories are handled, stored, and shared. Here is a look at how I manage the "fine print" so you can get back to the fun part - celebrating.
1. Understanding Ownership vs. Usage
When it comes to your wedding photos, there are two important legal terms to understand: Copyright and Printing Rights.
Copyright: As the creator of the images, Clover and Pine Photo LLC retains the legal copyright. This basically means I am the legal owner of the artwork I created. This allows me to use the images for marketing and portfolio purposes - showing off your beautiful day to future couples - unless you choose otherwise!
Printing Rights: While I own the copyright, you receive full Printing Rights with every wedding and elopement package. This means you are free to print your photos at any lab you like, share them on social media, and create your own albums for personal use. You have the freedom to enjoy your memories however you see fit.
2. Your Privacy Matters
While I love sharing the magic of a wedding day, I also deeply respect that these are your private memories. If you prefer that your images stay off social media and out of public portfolios, that is absolutely possible. Privacy is a standard option, and we can discuss your comfort level at any time during the planning process. I’m here to document your day for you, and your comfort always comes first.
3. The "Why" Behind the RAWs
Many photographers keep their RAW files under lock and key, but my philosophy is different. The heart of my work is capturing the "in-between" moments-the moment you tuck your hair behind an ear, a shared laugh during an inside joke, or a guest’s reaction in the background.
While your edited gallery represents my artistic vision and the true-to-color aesthetic you’ve fallen in love with, the RAW files are the complete record. Offering these files ensures that you have access to every single moment captured, providing an added layer of value for those who want to see the full, unfiltered story of their day.
4. How to Handle Your RAW Files
To get the most out of your unedited files, here are a few tips for long-term storage and viewing:
Use the Right Software: RAW files are professional-grade data files and won’t open like a standard JPEG. You’ll need software like Adobe Lightroom or a dedicated RAW viewer to see them.
The "Golden Copy": Always save your RAW files on a dedicated external hard drive (or two!). These are your "digital negatives" and should be kept in a safe place for decades to come.
Trust the Edit: Remember that RAW files are flat and unpolished by design. They are the ingredients, while the edited gallery is the finished meal. The RAWs are there for your archive, but the edited versions are the ones ready for the frame.
5. Posting Restrictions for Unedited Work
Overall, these are your images from one of the most important days of your life, and I want you to have them. However, to protect my professional reputation and brand identity, I do have a couple of requirements if you decide to share unedited images or videos publicly:
No Attribution: I kindly ask that you do not tag or name the Photographer or business in connection with unedited files.
No Association: To avoid public confusion regarding my professional output, unedited images should not be posted in the same gallery, carousel, or album as your final edited work.
Keeping these separate ensures that when people see my brand name, they are seeing the intentional, true-to-color finished product you hired me for, while still allowing you the freedom to share your full archive.
6. Open Communication
The most important practice of all is communication. Whether it’s a specific privacy concern, a question about how to print your files, or a request for a specific "in-between" moment you’re hoping I catch, I’m always an email away. We’re in this together to make sure your wedding archive is exactly what you dreamed it would be.
